Todler Program

Toddler Program

15–24 months

Poko Loko offers full and part-time toddler care starting at 15 months of age. Ratios are kept low, one caregiver per five toddlers. All meals are provided including breakfast, lunch, and two nutritious snacks. Parents are responsible for providing diapers and wipes of their choice. Our Toddler Program is structured to help your child learn socially and cognitively. Theme-based stories, singing, creative art, letters, numbers, colors, and shapes are all daily parts of our program. This program helps our toddlers adapt to scheduling, preparing them for our preschool programs that start at age two.

Toddler Program

Daily Schedule

Full-day hours include 6:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

Early Morning—Student Arrival

(6:30 a.m.– 9:00 a.m.)

As parents drop off their little ones, a warm welcome awaits. Toddlers are now free to explore, interact, and express as their curiosity guides them. Cereal plus another whole grain or protein option along with fruit and milk will be served from 6:30 a.m.–8:30 a.m. for breakfast.

Structured Learning

(9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.)

In an effort to prepare our toddlers for their preschool years, we try to break up their morning routine into small scheduled increments. Circle time, art time, and story time are integral parts of their schedule as well as singing, letters, counting, colors, and shapes. During this time a healthy snack is offered and outdoor playtime is allotted.

Afternoon

(11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.)

As noon approaches, our little ones grow hungry and tired. Our in house chef is sure to prepare a meal both balanced and nutritious. After filling their bellies, it’s time to rest. Each child will be able to nap for 2 hours every day on his own cot.

Late Afternoon—Parent Pick Up

(2:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.)

Every afternoon is free classroom play and a chance to socialize with other toddlers. Also, another healthy snack is offered and more outdoor playtime is available until your little one is picked up.

Information

  • Our toddler ratio is five toddlers with one caregivers. Each toddler room has a maximum of fifteen toddlers with three teachers.

  • Periodically throughout the year children will move up to an older room. The children are usually eager for this move because they are going to a new room that is stimulating and exciting. Their curriculum is getting more challenging, and they will be encouraged to learn and try new things. To help with this change, Poko Loko will let the child visit the new room before she moves. Parents will also be informed of this move.

  • Our toddlers take their naps on toddler-sized cots. Each child has his own cot with a blanket and sheet that is washed at least twice a week..

  • Our toddlers each go home with a “Toddler Tidbit” sheet that lets the parents know about what happened during the day. In addition to this, we encourage parents to talk to the teachers on a daily basis.

  • As toddlers, the children are introduced to a preschool schedule that is modified to be appropriate for their young age. The children eat breakfast, two snacks, and lunch together, and they all nap at the same time. Every morning the children enjoy their preschool activities; these activities include story time, circle time, music time, etc. Each child also completes a project; the projects may include finger painting, easel painting, bingo markers, coloring, etc. Throughout the day, the children have structured play times; activities during these times include playing with small manipulatives or large manipulatives, dramatic play, reading books, etc. Every month the parents receive the curriculum that their child’s class is following. The curriculum includes the special subjects the children are learning about and any special projects they will complete as well as our special songs, books, and activities.

  • Poko Loko provides cereal plus another whole grain or protein option along with fruit and milk and will be served from 6:30 a.m.–8:30 a.m. for breakfast. The children are fed a snack at about 9:00 a.m. and then again after naptime. Snacks may include fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese and crackers, etc., and milk or juice. Children are served a hot, nutritious, delicious lunch every day. Parents may take a copy of our monthly menu to see what we are serving. Please let your child’s teacher know if there is anything your child cannot have.

  • Parents are asked to provide diapers and wipes for their own child. We also ask you to leave a weather-appropriate outfit at the center in case we have to change your child for any reason. If your child uses a sip cup, you can leave one here that we will label and use only for your child. We will eventually teach the children to drink from a disposable cup. If your child has a special blanket that comforts him at naptime, please feel free to leave that with us also. Please label your child’s clothes and special articles with his name.

  • We have areas for all of our children to play outside. We also have baby buggies that the teachers use to take the children for walks. We ask that you leave your child with appropriate outerwear (including hat and gloves if needed) so that he is comfortable while outside.

Communication

Everyday a log about your toddler’s day is kept: every parent receives this upon pick-up of their child. On this log you will find little tidbits about your child’s wonderful day at Poko Loko, including information regarding meals, diapering, naps, mood, special activities, and art projects. Your toddler’s caregivers are also available for supportive feedback about your child. Parents are always welcome to visit their child during the day.
